PIERS
Whether it’s a new pier, storm damage
repair, or re-decking an older structure, we pride ourselves on building a
pier that combines both sturdiness and craftsmanship. All of our piers are
framed with 3”x8” clamps and stringers that are through-bolted where
possible using 5/8” galvanized bolts. The decking material we use is all
2”x8” boards which are hand-nailed with 20 penny galvanized nails.
Composite materials are also available in lieu of wood for decking your pier. They are warp, stain and fade resistant and eliminate nasty splinters.
BULKHEADS
Over time, left unprotected, the water’s constant lapping will erode away
your valuable waterfront property, often at an alarming rate. A wooden or
composite bulkhead is an excellent way of preventing or stemming that
loss.
At Yellow Dog Marine a quality wall begins with the poles, which we drive
at 6’ centers. 6”x6” whalers are then bolted to those poles at both the
bottom and the top using galvanized bolts. 2’x10’ or 3’x10’ (depending on
the application) sheets of tongue and groove sheathing are then driven
into the ground behind the whalers. The sheathing is then secured with an
interior 4”x6” lock whaler. The wall is then tied back to deadmen driven
further up the bank with 12’ long ¾” galvanized rods. To complete the job,
filter cloth is nailed to the inside of the wall to prevent dirt from
leaching through the wall. Backfilling of the wall is also available.
STONE REVETMENTS (RIP-RAP)
A riprap or stone revetment consists of layered, various-sized rocks
placed on a sloping bank, and is a very effective and popular method of
controlling shore erosion. We begin by digging a toe or trench to
stabilize the new wall and keep the rocks from sinking. This also stops
the soil from leaching through the rocks. Filter cloth is then spread
along the toe followed by the first course of stone. Stones are then
carefully placed atop the first course to the desired height, all the
while maintaining a 2:1 slope.
Living Shorelines
Traditionally, reduction of shoreline erosion has been accomplished by structural means, such as stone revetments or bulkheads. Structural armoring may be the only solution along very exposed, high-energy shorelines or along heavy boat traffic areas. However, many shorelines along the Bay’s tributaries and protected coves can benefit from an alternative, non-structural technique known as a living shoreline. This approach incorporates marsh vegetation into the project to enhance the habitat of the area. It can also reduce the loss of valuable waterfront land, protect your property, and decrease the amount of sediment entering the Bay’s waters. In many cases the vegetated marsh fringe serves as a buffer that filters runoff and pollution. By trapping this sediment, the beach may even grow wider. This approach is typically accomplished by a combination of stone (in the form of groins, sills and revetment) along with marsh plantings. By choosing a living shoreline approach, you could be eligible for state loans and grants. For more information on Living Shorelines, visit www.dnr.state.md.us or call 410.260.8523.
BOATHOUSES
Boathouses can provide your vessel with much needed protection from the
elements. Yellow Dog Marine can custom design or rebuild an existing
structure on your waterfront property as long as it remains within the
footprint of the original boathouse.
PIER & BULKHEAD INSPECTIONS
Whereas traditional home inspectors stop at the water’s edge, Yellow Dog
Marine Construction goes the extra step. With more than 20 years on the
water, we have the knowledge and expertise to provide you with a realistic
assessment of the condition of your pier or bulkhead – before you buy. And
that information can mean a lower purchase price at the settlement table.
No one wants to find out after they purchase the home of their dreams that
the pilings are rotting and the bulkhead is failing. Quick response,
reasonable rates, and on-site reporting can give you the peace of mind you
need before you buy.
PIER CLEANING
If your pier is starting to look a little aged, but you’re not really
ready to re-deck it, Yellow Dog Marine Construction now offers an expert
pier cleaning service that restores your pier to its nearly new look. With
a special cleaning solution and heavy duty power washer, you can get a few
more years out of that old pier.
PERMITTING SERVICE
Marine construction projects require permits from the Maryland Department
of the Environment as well as a building permit from your local county
jurisdiction. You can submit all of the paperwork and drawings yourself by
going to the
MDE website by clicking here. Or you can leave all of the
paperwork to us. Yellow Dog Marine will handle all of the site visits,
detailed computer drawings, as well as filling out all of the necessary
applications before sending them on to the state for approval. Once we
have your permit secured, we will call you to begin the work. The entire
process can take anywhere from 2-6 months.
